Visibility is the strategy. The channels are the pieces.

This week I finally launched the new Big Water CI website.

I say finally because this one took me a long time.

The marketing landscape has changed drastically since AI entered the picture, and I knew I couldn't just redesign the old site and call it done.

The whole puzzle had shifted.

The messaging had to change. The platforms had to change. The website had to change. Even the way I think about visibility had to change.

I had to step back, look at all the pieces, decide what still fit, what needed to move, and how they worked together in this new landscape.

What emerged was a much bigger idea of visibility—and the challenge every business faces: building its own landscape from all of the pieces available to it.

The Pieces Have Changed

For years, much of my work centered around social media, content and advertising.

Those things still matter. A lot.

But they're pieces.

Today, your messaging is a piece. Your website is a piece. Social media, search, advertising, video, email, reviews, referrals and AI—they're all pieces.

And the picture is different for every business.

A restaurant doesn't need the same visibility strategy as a contractor. A retail shop doesn't need the same pieces as a professional service business. A business serving tourists may need to reach someone who's already here and searching on their phone, while a business serving second homeowners may need to become visible weeks or months before that customer needs them.

There isn't one visibility formula anymore.

The challenge is figuring out which pieces matter, where they belong, and how they work together to make you visible to the people you actually want to reach.

Are You Visible in the Places That Matter to Your Customer?

For years I've asked my clients:

What do you want to say, and who do you want to say it to?

That hasn't changed.

What's changed is how many ways we now have to reach that person.

It's tempting to think the answer is to be everywhere.

It isn't.

Being on every platform, producing every kind of content, chasing every new technology and trying to keep up with every marketing trend isn't a visibility strategy.

It's exhausting.

The goal isn't to use every piece of the puzzle.

It's to figure out which pieces belong in your puzzle.

And then make sure they're working together.

Find Me. Understand Me. Remember Me.

Find me.

Can your customer find you where they're actually looking?

Not where you assume they're looking. Not simply on the platform you've always used.

Where are they actually looking for a business like yours today?

Understand me.

Once they find you, can they quickly understand who you are, what you do and why it matters to them?

This is where messaging becomes so important.

You can spend all the money in the world getting someone to your website, your social feed or your ad, but if they can't quickly understand what you do and why they should care, visibility hasn't accomplished much.

Remember me.

After they leave, have you created enough consistency and connection that they'll remember you when it's time to make a decision?

That's really the test.

Visibility isn't about being everywhere.

It's about building the right combination of pieces so the right customer can find you, understand you and remember you.

Building My Own Puzzle

That's what I had to do with the new Big Water CI website.

I wasn't simply replacing an old website with a prettier one.

I was rebuilding the picture.

Social media is still part of it. Paid advertising is still part of it. Content, video, search and strategy are still part of it.

But none of those individually describes what I do anymore.

The bigger job is visibility.

Helping businesses figure out where they need to be seen, what they need to say when they're seen, and how all those pieces work together.

Because the landscape is going to keep changing.

AI certainly won't be the last major change we have to adapt to. There will be new platforms, new tools and new ways customers search, discover and make decisions.

We can't rebuild our entire marketing strategy every time another piece changes.

We need to understand the picture we're trying to build.

Get to the Surface

Take a look at your own marketing puzzle.

Which pieces are working?

Which ones are there simply because they've always been there?

Which pieces are missing?

And, perhaps most importantly:

Are you visible in the places that matter to your customer?

You don't need every piece.

You need the right ones.

Put them together with a clear message, a clear audience and a clear purpose.

Find me. Understand me. Remember me.

That's visibility.

And that's how you get to the surface.
