How to Navigate the Slush-Pocket Season

In Tahoe, spring isn't a switch. It’s a slow slog through the slush-pocket season.

It’s that frustrating stretch where you think you’re stepping on solid ground, only to find yourself ankle-deep in a hidden pool of freezing melt. We want the bikes out, but the shovels aren't put away yet. The ground is still white, but our business mindset is already shifting toward the Sun.

We’re stuck in the "In-Between"—a season that requires better boots and a lot of extra "trail work" just to get from point A to point B.

Your marketing is currently in this exact same slog.

While everyone is now dreaming of the sun season surge, the reality of your current business data can feel a bit like that hidden slush: heavy, unpredictable, and a little messy. If you wait until the ground is dry to fix the path, you’ve already missed your window to run.

The Push Pull of Patience and Quick Reaction.

Navigating this middle ground requires a specific kind of patience. You can’t rush the melt, and you can’t force the town to turn into July overnight. But patience isn't the same as standing still.

In Tahoe, we know that spring skiing is a "blink and you miss it" opportunity. When the sun hits and the corn snow is perfect, the visitors are spontaneous and weather-driven. Get in that one last spring ski day to put the winter season to rest.

This is the time to react quick. You have to be nimble enough to grab that energy this weekend. If your marketing isn't calibrated to pivot for a bluebird Saturday, you’re leaving money in the slush. You need the patience to wait for the window, and the agility to jump through it the second it opens. Create options and wait to see which one will work this week.

This is the time to reflect. Look back over the season’s marketing. Did your marketing land? Or do you have the sense that it was out there but disconnected?

Doing the "Trail Work" for Summer

While we’re grabbing those last spring turns, we have to be prepping for the "Sun Season" just around the corner. This is where the real "trail work" happens. The consistent AI blizzard in the marketing world means your marketing trail heads may need some work this spring.

Changes in the algorithm are showing in my recent audits. For instance  The numbers for link clicks shows the interest is there. People are clicking, they are curious, but they are hitting slush-pockets on websites and bouncing. They are interested, but they aren't convinced.

  • Audit the Friction: Is your mobile site as messy as a Tahoe trailhead in April? If it’s hard to navigate, people will turn back. Check for functionality and friction.
  • Patch the Leaks: Don't wait for summer to fix a slow checkout or a confusing headline. Fix the path now while the pace is manageable. You can even do a few experiments to make sure the path is clear.
  • Look Forward: Capture your winter content now, but build your summer ad structures today. This time of year my content capture lists are long and all over the the map.

And don't Get Stuck in the Mud

The difference between a "busy" summer and a profitable one is what you do during this slog. Preparation is smart; disengagement is not.

Use this "In-Between" time to find the silence in your data. If you're seeing the clicks but not the customers, you've found a slush-pocket. Patch it now so that when the ground finally dries out and the Sun Season arrives, you’re already running at full speed.
