Summer is officially here.
The lake is bright, the patios are filling, the bikes are on the back of every other car, and Truckee/Tahoe has shifted into that familiar high-season hum. We can feel it before we even look at the numbers. The roads are moving differently. And every day I have to remember to pack a bit more patience, people choose come here to have fun and enjoy the Tahoe experience. We all have that in common.
Recent Chamber reports confirm what every local business owner already knows: people are moving through town in big numbers. The Highway 89 corridor shows 13 million impressions, while the Highway 267 and Airport Road corridor shows 9.7 million impressions during the year. That majority is in summer high season. That is a lot of people coming, going, searching, deciding, and filling in the open spaces of their day.
This is where the summer scroll begins.
Visitors are not always planning every moment weeks ahead of time.
Yes, they may have the big pieces figured out: the morning hike, the bike ride, the lake day, the rafting trip, the family lunch, the event they came up for. But Tahoe days have a way of opening up.
It might only be 1:30 in the afternoon.
The kids are fed.
The bike tour is done.
Everyone made it through the hike.
The beach morning wrapped up early.
The group is back in the car, wandering through town, or sitting somewhere with a cold drink asking the question every visitor asks at some point:
“What should we do next?”
And where do they look?
Their phones.
That is the summer scroll. Someone is looking for a shop to wander through, a gallery, a happy hour, live music, ice cream, a short walk, an easy activity, or something close enough that the whole group will agree to it.
This is not the time for local businesses to go quiet.
I say this with full understanding, because I do it too.
When summer gets busy, marketing is often the first thing that slips into the back room. We are serving the people in front of us. We are answering calls, managing schedules, solving problems, restocking shelves, working events, checking weather, helping customers, and trying to keep our own lives moving.
But online, silence can send the wrong message.
If someone finds your business and the last post was six weeks ago, they may wonder:
Are the hours current?
Is anything happening?
Are they open?
Are they available?
Is this worth the stop?
Meanwhile, you could be having your best week of the season inside the building.
There is a disconnect there.
A quiet feed can make a lively business look asleep.
This is probably not the season to overthink every post or launch a complicated campaign.
Summer marketing can be light. It can be simple. It can be useful.
Post the view.
Post the moment.
Post what is happening today.
Post one helpful tip.
Post one simple reason to stop in.
That is enough.
People scrolling in the middle of a Tahoe summer day are not looking for vague branding. They are looking for answers.
Are you open?
Can we still get in?
Is this good for kids?
Do we need a reservation?
Where do we park?
What time does it start?
Is this close by?
Is this worth changing our plan?
Clear information is good marketing.
This is also where local businesses can help visitors experience Tahoe well.
Gentle guidance works best.
Start early.
Give yourself extra time.
Park once and enjoy the day.
Bring water and layers.
Be patient in peak hrs. (Suggest optional times.)
Respect the lake, the trails, and the neighborhoods.
Support local while you are here.
That kind of content helps everyone. It gives visitors a better experience, and it helps the community breathe a little easier.
While we are at it, summer is also a good time to lead with gratitude.
Yes, there is traffic.
Yes, there are crowds.
But the people who come here also make it possible for many of us to build a life and a business in this place.
Some of them come back year after year. The same families. The same kids, suddenly taller. The same grandparents with the same favorite table. The same visitors who have made Tahoe part of their summer story.
That is worth celebrating.
“Welcome back to the families who return every summer.”
“We love being part of your Tahoe tradition.”
“Thanks for choosing local while you’re here.”
“Nothing better than seeing familiar summer faces again.”
That is not just content. That is connection.
The summer scroll is real.
People are here, phones in hand, looking for what comes next. They are making decisions in real time, often after the main plan for the day is already done.
So keep a light on.
You do not need to post every day. You do not need a production crew. You do not need perfect copy or polished video. You just need to stay present enough that people know you are open, active, welcoming, and ready to be part of their day.
Summer is here. The buzz is back.
Do not disappear when people are looking.

Nothing better than a good question to jump into.
