Not Your Waiting Room.

‍The first snow is here, winter plans are taking shape, and now is the time to get noticed before the crowds arrive.

We woke up to a white morning in Tahoe today. And just like that, everything feels different.

For local businesses, that first snowfall is more than a change in the weather. It's a marketing opportunity.

While we're looking out our windows at the fresh snow, people outside the Tahoe area are starting to imagine themselves here.

They're making plans, checking calendars, and thinking about where they'll stay, where they'll eat, and what they'll do when they arrive.

But here's something worth considering: When they start looking, will your business be part of what they find?

That's why November isn't your waiting room. It's your runway.

The Decision Happens Before the Visit

Think about your own buying habits.

When you're heading somewhere, chances are you've already looked at a few options. You've seen photographs, watched a video, read reviews, visited a website, or noticed a business showing up repeatedly in your social feed.

By the time you walk through the door, that business may already feel familiar.

And familiarity matters. When faced with several choices, we're often more comfortable considering a business we've seen or heard about before.

For Tahoe businesses, this is particularly important because so much of our economy depends on people who aren't physically here all the time.

If your marketing only reaches the people currently in town, you're potentially missing the customers who are planning to come.

The businesses people discover while planning are often the ones they'll consider when they arrive.

Visibility needs to reach beyond our zip codes.

Give People Something to Look Forward To

November is a great time to remind customers why they love coming to Tahoe and why your business deserves a place in their plans.

A restaurant can show off its winter atmosphere, signature dishes, or a comfortable place to catch up with friends. A retailer can introduce what's arriving for the season. A service business can help homeowners prepare before winter weather creates a problem.

You don't need to shout about sales or discounts.

You need to give people a reason to notice you, recognize you, and eventually remember you.

This is where good visual storytelling makes a difference. A photograph can catch someone's attention. A short video can introduce the atmosphere, people, products, and experiences that make a business worth visiting.

But those stories need to reach the people who might actually become customers.

A beautiful video sitting unnoticed on a social media page isn't doing much to help someone discover your business.

Great content deserves an audience.

The goal isn't necessarily to make a sale today. It's to become a familiar option when the moment to choose arrives.

The Quiet Season Is a Marketing Advantage

When business slows down, marketing is often one of the first expenses people question.

I understand that. Every dollar matters, especially for small businesses navigating Tahoe's seasonal swings.

But there's a difference between managing expenses and disappearing from view.

November gives us something that can be hard to find once winter hits: room to think.

It's a chance to refresh creative, update your website, check your Google Business Profile, build a few videos, and make sure your business is showing up where your future customers are looking.

And it's a good time to ask two questions:

What do I want people to know about my business this winter?

Who needs to see that message before they arrive?

The answers will look different for a restaurant in Olympic Valley, a retailer in Truckee, or a resort on the West Shore.

The important part is making those decisions intentionally, rather than waiting for the first big storm to start the conversation.

Build Recognition Before You Need Results

There's another reason to start now.

Marketing takes repetition.

One social media post might catch someone's attention. A well-placed advertisement might introduce your business. Seeing that business again, with a consistent message, helps build recognition.

And that recognition becomes valuable when people begin narrowing their choices.

Think about someone planning a weekend in Tahoe. They may have dozens of restaurants, shops, and activities to choose from. They'll probably never investigate every option.

Instead, they'll start with what catches their attention, what feels familiar, and what appears to meet their needs.

You want to be part of that consideration long before they're standing on the sidewalk deciding where to go.

Of course, recognition alone doesn't guarantee a sale. The experience, product, price, and timing still matter.

But people need an opportunity to discover what you offer before they can decide whether it's right for them.

Get to the Surface

November doesn't have to be a month of waiting for tourists or holiday spending.

It can be the month you make sure you're part of their plans.

Take one hour this week and look at your business through the eyes of someone planning a winter trip to Tahoe. Search for what you offer. Look at what comes up. Does your business appear? Is the information current? Does what they see give them a reason to take a closer look?

Because when the crowds return, people will have choices. Lots of them.

The question is whether they'll know enough about your business to make you one of those choices.

The season may start with snowfall. But your opportunity starts long before that.

That's your runway. Use it.
